Not What I’m Reading

According to my posting schedule, I should be writing a book review today. As I’ve gotten back into writing this blog in the last few weeks, I’ve been a little loose with the schedule I set for myself. To be honest, the schedule I set was kind of arbitrary; more of a way to keep myself from sitting down at my computer on Sundays and saying, “Uh, I don’t know what to write about…”

This week, however, everything seemed to line up perfectly: I finished the book I’d been reading last night and this is my content schedule. So what’s the problem?

Mostly, it just comes down to not wanting to write the review. And mostly, I don’t want to write the review because I didn’t really enjoy the book. I mean, it was fine. It was a fine story and fine writing and everything about it was just… fine. I didn’t want my review of it to come off like I didn’t like the story at all, because I did. But it also wasn’t a story that I couldn’t wait to pick back up, that I just had to know what happened next. And I know that I keep using this word, but that’s fine. Not every story has to be life altering. Not everyone will like every story.

Or, in this case, think that a story is just fine.

I’d rather not rip a story unless it was actively terrible in some way, either by execution or content. Mostly because of the adage, “If you can’t say anything nice…” etc. etc. But also because I wouldn’t want to discourage anyone from reading a story they might end up loving. Not everyone will love every story, but that also means that not everyone will dislike every story. So why shit on something just to ruin it for everyone else?

So instead, I’m just going to say that I hope you’re reading something awesome right now. And if you’re struggling through what you’re reading–hey, no one’s going to judge you if you want to put it aside and read something else. Well, some people might judge you, but they’re usually shitty people anyway.

Today is a good day to read a good story.

And if you’re looking for good stories, the Stokers were last night. Here are the nominees and winners.
