I received Ghost of Tsushima for Christmas, so I’m been playing that since finishing the DLC of Cult of the Lamb.
The player plays as Jin Sakai, a survivor of the first battle of a Mongol invasion of Japan. After being nursed back to health, Jin must travel around the island of Tsushima, gathering allies, defeating enemies, and developing skills and techniques.
The gameplay is like similar games I’ve played, such as Red Dead Redemption and Arkham City. There are main storyline quests to pursue that forward the story of saving Jin’s uncle from being held captive by the Mongol leader and side quests that don’t forward the story, but serve as opportunities to level up. The fighting is intricate, with four stances with advantages against specific opponents. I’m trying to get the hang of changing stances during long flights with multiple enemies attacking. So far, I haven’t gotten the hang of it yet. There are enough collectible items to satisfy the completionist gamer.
What I don’t like about games like this is the camera, which is controlled independently from your character. Jin also remains at the center of the camera, sometimes at the expense of seeing what’s happening around you. These two aspects take getting used to and can contribute to some frustration, especially during flights.
All in all, it’s an enjoyable game, but a little outside what I’d normally play. But I’m happy to have a brother in law who buys me cool games.
